Interior or exterior aluminium shutters?
Same metal, two different jobs. One governs light from inside the glass; the other stops heat before it ever arrives. Here is how we split the decision on the hot side of the Hunter.
The physics, in one paragraph
Once sunlight passes through glass, a good share of its heat is in the room; an interior shutter then manages glare superbly and heat usefully, by reflecting light back out and shading the floor. An exterior shutter intercepts the sun before the glass, so the heat never enters at all. That is the whole distinction: interior shutters are mostly a light instrument that helps with heat, exterior shutters are a heat instrument that also handles light. Both keep the airflow moving, which is the point of a louvre.
Choose interior aluminium when
- The opening is a very wide span where timber would need compromises; slim aluminium blades carry the distance without bowing
- The room is high-traffic and the finish needs to shrug off knocks
- You want one crisp, modern read across big glass, matched to the rest of an interior fit-out
Choose exterior aluminium when
- The alfresco or verandah becomes unusable on summer afternoons; panels enclose it into a shaded, breezy outdoor room
- A western wall of glass takes the full afternoon load and the house heats up no matter what happens inside
- The window behind is awkward to dress inside, and the honest fix is outside the frame
Exterior panels live in the weather, so the specification changes with the job: powder-coated for UV, fixings chosen for the wall, drainage and clearances checked on site. That is measure territory, not web-form territory, and it is why the two options are quoted side by side after we have seen the opening.
The Maitland framing
You will find aluminium shutters sold on salt-air survival up and down the coast, and that is real, but it is not this town's argument. Here the metal earns its place on heat and UV: long dry summers, a low sun with a clear run at bare-block western walls, and outdoor areas that want using in January. If your worst window faces west and the room behind it will not cool down, run it through the west-facing room guide first; if the heat wins that read, exterior aluminium is the conversation to have at the measure.
