Plantation shutters in East Maitland, Bolwarra and Telarah

Maitland's biggest suburb is also its best sampler: a period cottage, a seventies brick veneer and a brand-new infill build can share one tree-lined street, and each one's windows want something different.

The established east

One street, three window eras

East Maitland has been growing for a hundred and fifty years and never quite stopped, which makes it the suburb where our two crafts meet. In a single week out here we might fit front-tilt timber to a cottage inside the East Maitland conservation area, hidden-tilt wide blades to a renovated brick home's new family-room glass, and waterproof PVC to a unit bathroom near the hospital precinct.

The established streets hold one advantage the corridors envy: mature trees. Where a street's oaks and brushboxes already soften the western sun, the shutters' job shifts from heat defence to light shaping and privacy, and the blade and tilt we recommend shift with it. It is the same measure either way; the answers just come out different, which is rather the point of measuring.

Mature trees change the brief: less heat defence, more light shaping.

Bolwarra and the high ground

Bolwarra and Bolwarra Heights sit above the flats, house-proud and almost entirely detached homes, with long western outlooks that earn their sunsets and pay for them in afternoon heat. Wide blades tilted up keep the view in and the glare out; it is some of the most satisfying fitting we do, because the before-and-after happens at six o'clock the same day.

Telarah's older weatherboard and brick stock runs smaller windows in more of them; a whole-house fit-out there is often more panels and less glass than an estate job, and quotes accordingly, window by window.

Units and the CBD

Central Maitland and the East Maitland precincts carry a real share of units and apartments, and shutters suit them well: privacy at close quarters, light control without curtains eating the room. Interior shutters in a unit are usually straightforward; anything visible on the outside of a strata building is worth a word with the owners corporation first, and we are happy to help you frame that question before anything is ordered.

Bolwarra itself also carries a heritage conservation area, so the period homes guide applies on those streets too.

Free in-home measure & quote

The measure is free. The advice comes with it.

Every window here is made to measure, so an accurate price only exists after we have seen your windows and your light. Tell us about the rooms you are thinking about and we will arrange a time, measure each opening, and leave you with a written quote and a straight recommendation. No obligation either way.
